L/CMY color composite, hydrogen alpha (Ha -- 6563 angstroms) image, and overlay comparison image of galaxy NGC 2903 in Leo, processed by Al Kelly from Ha-filtered and continuum-filtered exposures taken by Arne Henden of the US Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ and CMY-filtered integrations taken by Al Kelly at Ft. McKavett, TX. Arne made 2 images, one with an Ha filter and one filtered for a nearby continuum region, using the 1.0-meter USNO telescope and a 1024x1024 SITe-chip CCD camera. The CMY images were made with an 8" SCT and a Cookbook 245 CCD camera. Arne's images were summed and processed to create the luminance layer for the L/CMY composite and were used to create the difference image for the Ha representation.

WCMY image of spiral galaxy M101 made by Al Kelly on 4/17/99 from Ft. McKavett, Texas using a CB245 and a C-8 telecompressed to f5.6. Twenty 60- second subexposures in cyan, twelve 60-second subexposures in magenta, and twelve 60-second subexposures in yellow were combined with thirty 60-second subexposures in white (IR-filtered only).

Image of "Hoag's Object," a distant ring galaxy (PGC 54559) imaged on 6/15/96 by Al Kelly with 32" f4 Newtonian and CB245 CCD camera from Danciger, Texas. This is an eleven-minute composite exposure which has been processed with a mild unsharp mask to bring out the faint spoke-like structure within the ring.

Image of Galaxy cluster Abell 2218 by Al Kelly, taken on 5/24/96 with 32" f4 Newtonian and CB245 CCD camera from Danciger, Texas. This is a 21-minute exposure (eighty-four 15-second images) showing about ten foreground stars and dozens of distant galaxies. This cluster was imaged by the Hubble Space Telesope in 1995 as part of a study of the affect of gravitational lensing. See the July, 1995 issue of Sky and Telescope Magazine, page 11, to see the gravitational lens arcs in Abell 2218

Closeup image of the center of Abell 2218 , as captured in the above image on 5/24/96. The arrows point to smudges of light which come from the very distant galaxies which have been brought into "focus" by the gravity of Abell 2218. There are few other amateur photographs of gravitationally lensed objects.
