L/RGB color composite of newly discovered nova v838 Monocerotis. Made by Al Kelly from images taken in April 2002 by Arne Henden of the US Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. Arne made numerous images using BVR filters. All images were summed to create the luminance layer, while red=R, green=V, and blue=B.

Arne says: "V838 Mon is a peculiar nova that was discovered in outburst in January 2002 by N. Brown, an Australian amateur.  It was considered unusual because the outflow velocities were low (not exceeding 500km/sec), it has a cool supergiant spectrum, and has a complex light curve, with wide variations between wavelengths.  However, what really made V838 Mon different from other novae was the appearance of the light-echo, first seen in mid-February in the U bandpass. There is still some controversy as to whether the material illuminated by the outburst light is in front of the object or is mass ejected during prior evolution.  The nice thing is that V838 Mon itself has faded dramatically in the past couple of weeks, making the relatively faint light echo an easy target for just about any amateur telescope."

V838 Mon can be seen at RA 07:04:04.81  DEC -03:50:50.9  (J2000).

Be aware this is a large file....about 850KB. It is a movie (an animated GIF) showing the recent eclipse of the periodic variable star OW Geminorum. OW Gem undegoes a 2-week eclipse by an unseen companion every 3.45 years, dimming by about 1.5 magnitudes and , as the movie shows, changing visual color. Made by Al Kelly from images taken by Arne Henden of the US Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. Arne made numerous UVBRI image sets before, during, and after the eclipse. He imaged each clear sky night during the period. The GIF comprises a sequence of L/RGB color composites, each deriving luminance from U+B+V+R+I and chrominance as follows: R=R+I, G=V, B=U+B. To avoid the visual disruption caused by changes in seeing conditions from night to night, all frames of the movie use luminance from the same night, while chrominance data in each frame is from the annotated night. The relative change in star size over the course of the eclipse was derived from each night's luminance data and accurately emulated with a filtering algorithm.

L/RGB color composite of GRB010222, centered on the coordinates of the gamma ray burster found by the Beppo-Sax observatory on February22, 2001. Made by Al Kelly from filtered images taken by Arne Henden of the US Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. Arne made long-exposure images using BVR filters. All images were summed to create the luminance layer, red=R, green=V, and blue=B.

Tricolor image of Albireo (Beta Cygni) by Al Kelly, taken on 9/6/96 with CB245 and C-8 (at f10) from Friendswood, Texas. The red, green, and blue exposures were 0.5 seconds, 2.0 seconds, and 4.0 seconds, respectively. For the first time, I used the SBIG KG-5 IR blocking filter with the Edmund Scientific dichroic color filters to achieve "true" color. Sure enough, the resulting colors are exactly the Albireo hues that I get visually!
